Twenty some years ago, Carl Newell started making parts to
improve on the Penn reels that many of the west coast fisherman were
using. He built new spools, spacer bars and reel seat clamp combos,
trying to overcome the problems of twist and poor freespool.
These Newell kits, known variously as broadbill , marlin, and
yellowtail specials and their associated parts are today
traded and sold as collectors items with a very lively market
following. Shortly therafter, Carl Newell decided to
build an entirely new reel, after thousands of hours of design and
experimentation, he came up with a light weight graphite
resin and stainless reel that was the protoype of todays
generation of Newell Reels.
